Student Fees and Refunds

This page explains VIT’s fee payment obligations, refund rules, when you may be eligible for a refund, and how to apply.

This information applies to all students of VIT and is based on VIT’s Student Fees and Refund Policy and Student Fees and Refund Procedure.

You should read this information before accepting your offer and contact VIT if you need help understanding your fees, payment obligations or refund options.

Fees and Payment Obligations

VIT provides information about fees and charges before enrolment, including through offer and acceptance documents. VIT’s policy states that prospective and current students must be provided with clear information about study costs and refunds before enrolment.

Students are required to pay tuition fees and any other applicable charges by the due date. Fees and payment arrangements are provided in the student’s offer letter, Fees Agreement and Instalment Payment Plan.

VIT course fees are set annually and may increase over the duration of a course. Students will be given reasonable notice of changes to fees and associated costs.

Initial Payments

International Students

International students must make the initial payment listed in their Offer Letter before receiving a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), including tuition fees, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and any other fees required by VIT.

Domestic students must pay their first semester tuition fees and any other fees required by VIT after receiving a formal Offer Letter and before the semester starts.

Late Payment of Fees

Students must pay their fees by the due date.

Late payment may result in a daily late payment penalty. If tuition fees are not received by the due date, VIT may advise you of its intention to cancel your enrolment. You will have 20 working days to appeal the decision using VIT’s complaints and appeals process.

For international students, cancellation of enrolment may affect your student visa.

If fees remain unpaid, VIT may take further action to recover overdue amounts, which may result in additional costs.

When You May Be Eligible for a Refund

Refunds are assessed according to VIT’s refund requirements. The amount refunded depends on the reason for your refund request and when VIT receives your written notice or refund application.

You may be eligible for a refund in circumstances such as:

Visa Refusal Refunds for International Students

If your student visa is refused before you start your course, or you withdraw on or before the agreed start date because of visa refusal, VIT will refund the course fee minus the applicable visa refusal default amount or the amount allowed under the procedure.

If your student visa is refused after you have started your course and this results in withdrawal or failure to pay fees, VIT will refund unspent tuition fees for the weeks in the default period. Non-tuition fees are not refunded in this circumstance.

Withdrawal Before Course Commencement

If you withdraw before your course starts for a reason other than visa refusal, the refund amount depends on when VIT receives your written notice of withdrawal.

VIT’s procedure states:

Withdrawal After Course Commencement

In most cases, no refund will be issued if you cancel your enrolment after your course commencement date, including if you abandon the course before completion.

No refund will be issued if your enrolment is cancelled because of:

If VIT Cannot Deliver Your Course

Provider default may occur if:

If this occurs, you may be entitled to a refund of unspent tuition fees or placement in an alternative course. VIT’s procedure refers to this as provider default. If this occurs, VIT will meet its obligations to students within 14 days from the day of default.

Students may be offered either:

If VIT is unable to meet these obligations, the Tuition Protection Service (TPS) may assist eligible students with placement in a suitable alternative course or a refund of unspent tuition fees.

OSHC, Airport Pickup and Accommodation Refunds

For international students, if your refund application is approved before course commencement, VIT will refund the OSHC amount you paid to VIT.

If you have already commenced your studies, you must apply directly to your OSHC provider for any OSHC refund.

Airport pickup or accommodation amounts will only be refunded where the money has not already been paid to the external service provider.

If your refund application is approved before course commencement, VIT will refund airport pickup or accommodation amounts only where the money has not already been paid to the external service provider. If the money has already been paid, you must apply directly to the relevant provider.

VIT is not responsible for the refund policies of external providers.

VIT will notify you of the outcome of your refund application in writing. Any refund calculated under the policy will be paid within 10 working days of VIT receiving the Refund Application Form.
