Turn curiosity into capability — and capability into new knowledge.
Begin your Master of Research and develop advanced capability in research, analysis and evidence-based decision making. As organisations become increasingly data-driven and innovation-focused, research skills are in demand across industry, government and academia. The MRes equips you with the research skills needed for research-intensive roles, strategic analytical positions and progression to doctoral (PhD) study, giving you the expertise to produce knowledge rather than consume it.
VIT has been educating IT and Business professionals since 1998. The MRes builds on this legacy by combining advanced research methods training with real-world relevance and a supervised thesis. You will learn qualitative and quantitative research techniques, work ethically with data, frame meaningful research problems and communicate your findings clearly. Our research-active staff and structured support help you graduate with proven capability in independent research.
With a long history of educating IT and Business professionals, VIT provides a supportive environment for advanced study. You will benefit from research-active academic staff, structured supervision, and student support services that help you stay on track throughout your research journey.
Gain capability in qualitative and quantitative research methods, research design, data analysis and academic writing. Structured training prepares you to plan and conduct independent research with confidence.
Learn how to conduct research responsibly in line with ethical guidelines and integrity standards. Build strong skills in literature review, data governance and ethical decision-making.
Work closely with an academic supervisor to develop a research proposal, undertake original research and produce a thesis demonstrating advanced scholarship in your chosen field.
Apply research skills to contemporary challenges in Business or Information Technology, generating evidence-based insights that support innovation and real-world decision-making.
Graduate with a qualification that supports progression into doctoral study or research-focused roles in industry, government and academia, where analytical capabilities are valued.
Shape your thesis around an area that matters to you—topics may reflect industry interests, career goals or emerging trends within your discipline.
The Master of Research with Information Technology specialisation enables you to undertake original research in a range of IT fields. Research topics may address sector-specific challenges, emerging technologies or organisational needs within the digital environment.
Information Technology research areas include:
While the areas listed above represent the primary research areas of the Master of Research, applicants with research interests outside these areas are encouraged to apply. Proposed research topics will be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to the availability of appropriate supervisory expertise.
Students undertaking an Information Technology research thesis are supported by two supervisors: a Principal Supervisor and a secondary Supervisor (Co-Supervisor), appointed based on disciplinary alignment, supervisory expertise and capacity. The supervision team guides the development of research questions, methodology and thesis preparation, and provides academic support throughout the research project.
Supervisor allocation considers factors such as Information Technology disciplinary alignment, supervisory expertise and supervisory capacity. Research topics are developed in consultation with supervisors and must be academically suitable, methodologically feasible and aligned with supervisory expertise. Topic availability cannot be guaranteed in advance and is subject to supervisory capacity.
Research projects involving human participants, data, organisations or technology infrastructures may require ethics approval in accordance with institutional and national guidelines, particularly where digital systems, user data, cybersecurity, cloud environments or organisational IT networks are involved.
Earn a degree that will elevate your international career prospects. Build a global network with students from over 100 countries around the world.

The Master of Research develops advanced capability in research design, data collection and analysis, academic writing and ethical research practice. Students complete Research Training units in qualitative and quantitative methodologies, undertake supervised project development and produce a research thesis that contributes to knowledge or practice within their field. The course includes structured milestone reviews, supervision meetings and research integrity requirements that prepare graduates for doctoral study or research-intensive roles.
Develop foundational capability in research design while building the professional ethics required for responsible research practice. This unit introduces the major stages of the research process, including identifying research problems, reviewing literature, designing methods and collecting and analysing data. It emphasises research integrity, national ethical standards and data governance, enabling students to design defensible methodologies and prepare ethical research plans. Students also learn to communicate and defend research designs to specialist and non-specialist audiences, building capability for later thesis work.
Develop advanced capability in quantitative research design, analysis and interpretation. Engage with experimental and quasi-experimental methods, sampling strategies, regression and classification models, time-series approaches and model validation. Apply ethical and reproducible data practices to evaluate validity, bias, reliability and uncertainty in empirical research. Work with datasets aligned to your field and communicate quantitative findings clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Develop advanced capability in qualitative research design and analysis for IT and business research contexts. Examine epistemological foundations, design studies using interviews, observation, document analysis and case studies, and apply systematic coding and thematic analysis using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis tools (CAQDAS). Practice ethical reflexivity, apply sampling strategies and evaluate trustworthiness criteria such as credibility, transferability and dependability. Present rigorous qualitative findings with clarity and impact.
Integrate your research training into a structured literature review, research proposal and supervised feasibility study. You will learn to identify research gaps, formulate aims and questions, justify methodological choices and assess feasibility, ethics and resource requirements. Working with a supervisor, you will conduct preliminary data collection or pilot work to evaluate methodological alignment and practical viability. This unit establishes the foundation for the major thesis by confirming candidature and refining the proposed research design.
Undertake an independent information technology research project under academic supervision and contribute to knowledge or practice within your IT field. Refine your research design, synthesise literature, collect and analyse data, interpret findings and produce a written thesis that meets scholarly, ethical and disciplinary standards. Present work-in-progress through scheduled meetings and milestone reports, respond to supervisory feedback and demonstrate critical reflection on research decisions. This capstone unit consolidates advanced research capability and supports progression to doctoral study or research-intensive roles in Information Technology. The thesis stage includes milestone presentations and supervisory reviews to support research progress and academic quality.
